BAPTISM:
Throughout Church history, Christians have understood Baptism to be both a sign and seal of our salvation in Christ. As a sign, Baptism signifies our union with Christ and what God has done for us in and through Christ. First, Christ died in our place and for our sins. Second, Christ literally and physically rose from the dead on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:4). Just as Jesus was raised to new life, so too we are raised to new life in resurrection power (Romans 6:4). This resurrection is signified when we are brought out of the baptismal water and is demonstrated as we walk in obedience to our Lord by the power of the Holy Spirit. Additionally, Baptism is a seal of our salvation. When a bride and groom enter the covenant of marriage, they exchange vows and rings. The vows are the promise of covenantal love, and the rings are the seal of the covenant. Rings remind us of our marital promises and privileges. In a similar way, we wear our baptism as a seal of our salvation (Romans 4:11). It reminds us of God’s love, faithfulness, affection, approval, and our commitment to him.
INFANT DEDICATION:
When a child is born to a Christian family, we acknowledge and celebrate that birth through an infant dedication. An infant dedication provides a way to give thanks to God for the gift of life and allows the parents to formally acknowledge their Biblical duties and responsibilities in raising their new child. It also provides an opportunity for the church to commit in supporting the family in their work of raising the child. We celebrate infant dedications for church members at Coram Deo Church.
INFANT BAPTISM:
There are brothers and sisters in the faith who believe that infants born to at least one Christian parent ought to be baptized. This position is referred to as paedobaptism and has been a common practice in the Church since its earliest days. While paedo baptism is not the formal position we hold as a church, we do understand and respect the Biblical case for it. The elders are happy to defer to the head of households when it comes to the practice of infant baptism and will perform infant baptisms upon request by members of Coram Deo Church.
