Sermon Text

Luke 23:44–46

The Death of Jesus

[44] It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, [45] while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. [46] Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last. (ESV)

Psalm 150

Let Everything Praise the LORD

[1] Praise the LORD!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens!
[2] Praise him for his mighty deeds;
praise him according to his excellent greatness!

[3] Praise him with trumpet sound;
praise him with lute and harp!
[4] Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and pipe!
[5] Praise him with sounding cymbals;
praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
[6] Let everything that has breath praise the LORD!
Praise the LORD! (ESV)

Prayer of Confession

Almighty God, we acknowledge and confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed; we have not loved you with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength; we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. Deepen within us our sorrow for the wrong we have done, and the good we have left undone. Lord, you are full of compassion and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy; there is always forgiveness with you! Restore to us the joy of your salvation; bind up that which is broken, give light to our minds, strength to our wills, and rest to our souls. Speak to each of us, and let your word abide with us until it has wrought in us your holy will. Amen.

Benediction

Heavenly Father, you are good, true, worthy of our praise and worthy of our trust. Because of our sin and the world we live in, it can be hard for us to trust you at times. Father, forgive us of the times we doubt or when we look to trust in other things. In those times, remind us of your love that has been shown to us through Jesus: His life, death, resurrection and ongoing intercession on our behalf. Remind us of your Word that has been given to us: to know you, love you, trust you, and follow you. When we doubt or trust in other things, cause our heart to remember you, that we might embrace you and trust in your words. You have told us that if we trust you with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding, you will make our paths straight. By your grace and for your glory, may this be true of your people at Coram Deo. May we be a people who entrust you with all things and joyfully follow you with faith, hope, and love. We ask this of you in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
