Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” JOHN 11:25–26 (ESV)
Leo Tolstoy once asked, “Is there any meaning in my life that the inevitable death awaiting me does not destroy?” In other words, does death win?
When we arrive at the end of our lives and we take our final breath, will we cease to matter? Does the grave rob our lives of all meaning and purpose? We may find temporary solace in the notion that others will remember us after we die. But what will happen when they die? What happens when nobody is alive to remember you? What happens when nobody is left at all? Does your life cease to matter? If death is all the future holds, then how can we speak of meaning and purpose in our lives in the here and now?
While the world tries to offer us thin anecdotal hope, Christianity offers us much, much more. The Bible’s answer to the problem of death and meaninglessness is the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. His resurrection means that death is not ultimate and the grave does not win. Instead, Christ is Lord over all, even death itself. Through faith in him, we receive eternal life. Consequently, our lives matter.
Your life matters because Jesus was raised from the dead.
