Sermon text
Psalm 56
[1] Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me;
all day long an attacker oppresses me;
[2] my enemies trample on me all day long,
for many attack me proudly.
[3] When I am afraid,
I put my trust in you.
[4] In God, whose word I praise,
in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.
What can flesh do to me?
[5] All day long they injure my cause;
all their thoughts are against me for evil.
[6] They stir up strife, they lurk;
they watch my steps,
as they have waited for my life.
[7] For their crime will they escape?
In wrath cast down the peoples, O God!
[8] You have kept count of my tossings;
put my tears in your bottle.
Are they not in your book?
[9] Then my enemies will turn back
in the day when I call.
This I know, that God is for me.
[10] In God, whose word I praise,
in the LORD, whose word I praise,
[11] in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.
What can man do to me?
[12] I must perform my vows to you, O God;
I will render thank offerings to you.
[13] For you have delivered my soul from death,
yes, my feet from falling,
that I may walk before God
in the light of life. (ESV)
Call to Worship
Psalm 21:1–7
[1] O LORD, in your strength the king rejoices,
and in your salvation how greatly he exults!
[2] You have given him his heart’s desire
and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah
[3] For you meet him with rich blessings;
you set a crown of fine gold upon his head.
[4] He asked life of you; you gave it to him,
length of days forever and ever.
[5] His glory is great through your salvation;
splendor and majesty you bestow on him.
[6] For you make him most blessed forever;
you make him glad with the joy of your presence.
[7] For the king trusts in the LORD,
and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved. (ESV)
Prayer of Repentance
Lord, you have opened your arms to welcome us as your children. You alone can forgive our sin. You alone can mend the scars of our shame. When we were found guilty, the blood of your perfect Son, Jesus, was spilled so that we could be declared innocent. Lord, thank you for your mercy toward us. May we run to no other source of refuge. May we wash in no other fountain. May we receive from no other fullness. Or rest in no other relief than in the cross of Jesus our Savior. Amen.
Benediction
Heavenly Father, You are our shield and our great reward. Whatever might happen to us, we shall not be alarmed. You are our defense and refuge in the day of trouble.
For, we are most secure in You. Although we meet losses and afflictions, they will not overwhelm us. For You will keep us by Your power. May we be reminded that you have made victory over the great armies of our sin. You know how great worry and fear have come to Your people. Yet, Your tender love for us makes You concerned for our inner feelings and thoughts. Although we bring our sadness and anxiety to you, by faith, give us Your oil of gladness, and dress us in a garment of praise instead of a faint spirit, that we may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that You may be glorified. By Your grace and power at work in us, may we sow in hope that we may reap in joy. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen
