Sermon text
Luke 2:15-20
[15] When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” [16] And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. [17] And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. [18] And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. [19] But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. [20] And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. (ESV)
Call to Worship
Psalm 37:1–5
[1] Fret not yourself because of evildoers;
be not envious of wrongdoers!
[2] For they will soon fade like the grass
and wither like the green herb.
[3] Trust in the LORD, and do good;
dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
[4] Delight yourself in the LORD,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
[5] Commit your way to the LORD;
trust in him, and he will act. (ESV)
Prayer of Repentance
Father, we confess that our hearts are hard and imperceptive to your grace. We have traded lasting joy for temporary pleasures and substituted gifts for the giver. For all that we have done and all that we have failed to do, please forgive us. Give us clean hands and contrite hearts. Renew a right spirit within us and help us to treasure you as our greatest hope and joy. Direct our eyes in faith towards the birth of Christ at Bethlehem and then further towards his sacrifice at Calvary. Lord, we believe. Help our unbelief. Amen.
Benediction
Heavenly Father,As we praise you today, may we join in song with the Heavenly Hosts that continue to praise your glory throughout the heavens. May we be as wise as the shepherds to kneel before your son in worship each day. May we be like Mary to wonder and meditate on his incarnation. May we join the angels in proclaiming, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” May we be like the wise men who brought him gifts, and offer him our all each day. May we go on our way rejoicing, glorifying, and praising him for the love he has shown us. We thank you for all the joy you have brought us in Jesus Christ. In his name, we pray. Amen
